Big changes are in store for swimming enthusiasts in Lanigan.

The Lanigan and District Waterpark Committee (LDWC) is hoping to start construction of a new swimming pool as early as fall 2019 if all fundraising efforts go as planned over the coming months.

The LDWC is one step closer to achieving this goal, through a recent partnership with Nutrien. Funds raised in 2018 will be potentially matched by Nutrien up to $25,000.

LDWC Chairperson, Chelsea Boyko, says the organization reached out to a number of large and small local businesses about the project. The committee is looking for much support from individuals and businesses to raise enough funds to get the go-ahead from town council.

The existing pool was constructed in 1972 and Jennifer Thompson, the Chief Administrative Officer for the town of Lanigan, says there is a growing need for a new pool at this point.

Because the current pool doesn't have a "zero entry", the pool isn't inclusive. A zero entry pool allows swimmers to walk into the pool and would allow swimmers with disabilities to enjoy the pool more easily.

"With the zero-entry, it would be wheelchair accessible, whereas now, it isn't," says Thompson.

Many fundraisers are planned for the coming year, including the LDWC's fourth annual Splash of Spirits events which is scheduled for February 10th.
