The Humboldt and District Music Festival will be gracing the city over the next couple weeks.

Musician across all disciplines will compete in judged competitions in different locations across the city, all coming together for the final show on April 1st.

"It's been something that's been going on for over 80 years. This week is our piano competitions and next week is our vocal and bands competitions. The city of Humboldt has so many great opportunities and in this case, it's really highlighting the benefits of music and art in young people lives. We want to give them an opportunity to perform and this provides that platform. They do amazing things as a result," said Patti Durand, President of the Humboldt Music Festival Association.

The individual competitions are judged with winners advancing to the final show taking place at the Westminister United Church.

"The judicators are brought in from around the province. They are asked to think about which performers had exceptional performances, so typically it will be the winning performers, but they're also looking for something unique."

Performing in the final show is a great incentive for the participants, but there's much more on the line, including scholarships and prizes.

"There is a number of scholarships, thousands of dollars worth of scholarships actually as awarded each year. It recognizes students that are typically in more than one entry, or have done an exceptional performance and showed that they are well prepared."
