The annual steak supper in Muenster is virtually a rite of passage in spring. Every year around 250 patrons enjoy grilled to perfection steaks along with the trimmings prepared by members of the Muenster Elks service organization. This year, however, there was a little added ambience to the event held on Saturday, April 27th. During the first seating, the village and a large rural area east of Humboldt were subject to an unexpected power outage.

This year marked the 25th anniversary of the Steak Supper. Like many such gatherings in small communities, the event serves as an excuse to blow off the winter dust and come together outside the confines of a hockey or curling rink.

Gord Kiefer is the committee chairperson for the Steak Supper. He explains, "Every year the event is very well supported by the entire area around Muenster, Humboldt, St. Gregor, Leroy, you name it. Every year the funds go to local charities, not only in Muenster by in the area."

Kiefer says that among the main beneficiaries over the years have been the Humboldt and District Hospital Foundation along with St. Mary's Villa.

The power outage did not affect the supper preparations as the stoves were all natural gas and the outdoor grills for the steaks were all propane fired. Gas-powered generators soon arrived and were stationed outside to provide power to tripod lighting. The quick response of the Elks and their supporters meant that the evening went off without a hitch for the hall full of diners.
