Saskatchewan is adding blue and amber flashing lights to its snow removal equipment to help improve safety on roads.

It's hoped the lights will make it easier for drivers to see snowplows, graders and snow blowers as they go about their work.

Communication Officer for the Highways Department Steve Shaheen explained more about the adoption.

"The combinations of these lights will make ministry snow plows more visible to motorists, other provinces like Manitoba, Ontario, and Newfoundland have already adopted them. The idea essentially is to make the snow plows more visible and ultimately safer."

Activities that are performed by the ministry this time of year include plowing snow, and sanding and salting.

It's illegal in Saskatchewan to pass snow removal equipment at more than 60 kilometers an hour when lights are flashing.
