The grand opening for Mel Molle Park in Watson took place on Saturday which included live music, a Barbecue, game, and a movie.

Economic Development Comitee Chairperson Ed Weber explains that while the grass was always kept, the park was never set up until recently.

"It was just a big green space until last weekend, we had a tent out there and dedicated it. More than just one or two kids were out there and a lot of people who didn't realize what was there until they got out there."

Watson resident Mel Molle planted and looked after the trees before he passed away last year, as Weber explains.

"He was a tree man of our town and he decided it was time to water these trees and care for them and keep them growing. He took care of them while he was in town and able to take care of them."

He explains more about why they named the park after Molle.

"Mel had done so many things out here and work with the park. They thought they maybe the Economic Development Committee should take this on name the park, do this and do that. It was very easy to name it. Mel watered all the trees out there and took care of them, so we named it Mel Molle Park."

Mel Molle was also the recipient of a few awards, including the Air Canada Heart of Gold award as well as the Waston Citizen of the Year Award.
