This spring will see a big road trip in the works for one local teenager.

Devdan Chegus, a 15-year-old student at Watson School will be heading to Munich, Germany for the Taekwondo World Championships. Taking place from April 24th to the 28th of this year, Chegus will be the second-youngest competitor on the Canadian team. He trains at the Watson Taekwondo Club under his mentor Jeff Turchyn.

With recently earning a second-place finish in the light-heavy sparring category, he qualified for the World Championship Team, and will head to Germany to face off against many other athletes from around the world.

When asked about the excitement behind his nomination, Chegus talked about the process, and how he was ultimately selected.

"The first step is attending a National Championship event, and with a first or second place finish, you will be sent off to a training camp. From there, you are further evaluated and either sent home or on to the Worlds," said Chegus.

When questioned about the reasoning behind his love for the sport, one word really summed it up best.

"I love the comradery we have between clubs and students. I find with other sports, competition tends to overrule many things. With Taekwondo, any 2 competitors have the same level of respect for one another, that is really what the sport teaches you."

Chegus trains up to 5 days a week and is thoroughly enjoying his time participating in the sport.
