The Marysburg Centre for the Arts welcomed a local artist on Sunday night.

Spencer McKnight brought his Songs of the Great War to the community, playing alongside pianist Mark Turner.

McKnight is originally from LeRoy and says he got his interest in music at a young age.

"My mom sang with St. Petes Chorus and so I watched that quite a bit growing up," he explained. "As I was in my teens I started to sing myself. When I was about 17 I started taking more serious vocal lessons and that allowed me to move to Toronto for a while and I studied with a voice teacher out there."

McKnight credits Dulcie Kirzinger of Englefeld for helping guide him at a younger age.

Over his career thus far, McKnight has won multiple national awards and often sings in the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra.

His performance Songs of the Great War explores songs that helped shape music during war times, according to McKnight.

"It's all music written in and around the First World War. I've been working on this concert for a year and a half to two years now," he said. "I've been working on this concert because we are coming up on the 100th anniversary of armistice."

McKnight performed in Maple Creek on Thursday, prior to visiting Marysburg. He will perform the set in North Battleford and Outlook in September.
