Sports teach discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, and determination, among many other traits needed to pave the way for a successful life. Being able to grant the opportunity of sport to kids in need, is the goal of KidSport.

The Humboldt Uniplex along with Community Leisure Services of Humboldt and KidSport hosted a BBQ on November 7th to raise funds that would go towards that cause.

"We have actually seen our applications go way up this year, we've given out almost twice as many grants than what we have in the past couple of years," said Mike Ulriksen, Director of Community Leisure Services, with the City of Humboldt.

All the money that is raised at the BBQ will go back into the local chapter of KidSport and go towards funding applicants in the coming years.

"It's vital that all the kids in our community have the opportunity to participate, unfortunately, a lot of kids have the desire to and have the skills to, they just don't have the financial availability. So what we get to do is provide those kids with the opportunity to register for programs, travel to programs and purchase equipment for programs. So there isn't anyone in our community that doesn't have the opportunity and means to participate if it's the financial means that's the barrier.

Last year the local chapter of KidSport helped 35-40 kids participate in sports. They plan to be over 60 when this year is done.

With the social, personal and developmental benefits in sports, people are finding that KidSport is an instrumental way of giving back to the community.
