JCI Humboldt has been rewarded for their efforts in helping grow the community.

Tuesday night the group was presented with the Premier's Service Award, which recognizes clubs or organizations for their commitment to growing communities in the province.

"There are some great groups within our communities that we need to celebrate and recognize the good work that they do," said Humboldt MLA Donna Harpauer who was on hand to make the presentation.

Harpauer added that even she has benefited from some initiatives promoted by the Jaycees, citing the aquatic centre and spray park as popular destinations for her grandchildren.

"When they come to visit, it is a great place to take them. It is appreciated not only by the families here in Humboldt and makes quality of life better in Humboldt, but it is also appreciated by those coming in for a visit."

Being able to assist others in enjoying different amenities is one reason Harpauer is fond of the work JCI Humboldt does.

"It is a great way to socialize, have fun and help your community. It helps the old and young alike. It is not just one particular group of people that you are being able to improve quality of life," she noted.

"Whenever we can do something for our community, we feel better about ourselves. I encourage all people to join a club, whether it be this one or another one."

Former member and current Senator for the group, Larry Jorgenson echoed that statement.

"My second or third year as a Jaycee, I traveled to a national convention in Canada," he explained. "It was amazing to see other people that you never met and you could sit down at the table and have a conversation exactly like tonight with these people. It doesn't matter if they're lawyers, bankers, welders, butchers, they're all in Jaycees for the same reason as you."

He furthered his appreciation for current members due to their commitment to keeping the group intact.

"When I started Jaycees they were kind of going through a situation where some of the older members were starting to age out and give up. We went through a period of time where we had very few members and we are one of the only clubs left in Saskatchewan. A lot of clubs folded in the 80's."

Groups from Leader, Meadow Lake and Swift Current were also recognized for 2015. The award was first launched in 2013.
