While snowmobilers and cross country skiers aren't pleased with a lack of snow, the frozen lakes of the region are scattered with ice fishing enthusiasts.

January is typically when the season begins to ramp up as derbies are held.

Conservation Officer Kevin Harrison reminds fishers that nothing changes just because the water is frozen.

"Even if you are ice fishing, you require a valid fishing license to fish. Licenses are available through the ministry offices or online."

Harrison says that ensuring your own safety should be front of mind.

"We encourage people who are angling in the province to keep in mind safety and be cautious out on the ice. Check with other local anglers for information."

The guideline is typically four inches for walking on ice, eight inches for snowmobiles, and 12 inches for small vehicles.

On January 20, Lake Lenore will be holding their annual derby. It is one of the top competitions in the province, with over $25,000 up for grabs in cash and prizes.
