Naturopathic Medicine Week begins today.

The goal of the week is to bring awareness to a growing profession.

Dr. Megan Parker describes the difference between Medical Doctors and Naturopathic Doctors.

"Medical doctors are experts in disease and pathology. So if someone has a diagnosed condition, they are great at treating that disease and preventing progression of it. Naturopathic doctors are treating underlying cause of disease. So instead of treating the symptoms, we are looking for the root cause and trying to optimize health before we develop those diseases."

Dr. Parker says recognizing Naturopathic medicine has been a big focus in the Province of Saskatchewan.

"The Saskatchewan Association of Naturopathic Practioners is working really hard to raise awareness of naturopathic medicine. We've had it proclaimed in the province of Saskatchewan and almost every city."

Mayor Malcolm Eaton met with Dr. Parker to proclaim Naturopathic Medicine Week in the City of Humboldt.

Dr. Parker believes Naturopathic doctors are making a difference in Saskatchewan.

"I think people are realizing naturopathic doctors are trained medical professionals. We have 7 years of post-secondary education, and we're trying to find answers We're treating that underlying cause of disease, and helping people have optimal health."

There are over 13 hundred Naturopathic Doctors across Canada.

Naturopathic Medicine has been practiced in Saskatchewan since 1954.
