While the Sask Party government has passed legislation allowing ridesharing companies to operate in the province, it’s not clear when they might arrive in Humboldt.

Lyft is not yet in Canada, and Uber has said it won’t operate in cities with a population of fewer than 50,000 people, Humboldt Mayor Rob Muench said.

However other options exist, such as the Thunder Bay-based company URide which focuses on smaller markets.

“We will maybe look at pursuing that as an option for our community. Those types of things, I’d like to see them come here because I think it’s something the community would want, but there has to be a business model that’s going to work in a small market like ours.”
