Monday wasn’t a great day to run the Boston Marathon.

Tanner Schatz endured rain, wind and temperatures around freezing, and still managed to set a personal best of 2:48:46 - good for 486th place in a field of 30,000 runners.

He had hoped to just crack the top 2,000.

“I was quite happy,” he said.

The 31-year-old Humboldt native started running in elementary school with track and field, but only got serious recently. He did marathons in Saskatoon and Victoria last year to qualify for Boston.

He enjoys the health aspect of running, and it’s a good way to unwind after a busy day, he said.

That race typically sees half a million spectators, and this year’s event was the fifth anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings. It was quite the experience, he said.

“It was absolutely amazing to take part in one of the oldest marathons in the world.”

For his next race, he plans to run the Queen City Marathon in Regina and see if he can get on the podium.

He’s also pondering a long-term goal of running in the other five top marathons in the world besides Boston in the coming years - Chicago, New York, Berlin, London and Tokyo.

Schatz, a doctor, will be returning to Humboldt from Saskatoon to practice in July.

“We’re looking forward to get back to the hometown and working there.”
