For nearly ten years, Bryce Nagy has dedicated his free time to his craft, the art Shotokan Karate.

Nagy says at first, karate was a great way for him to get active and learn self defense, but as he has continued his involvement in the sport more and more opportunites have come about.

His latest comes on the heels of his participation in the National Canadian Championships in Saskatoon.

"We had several provinces come to Saskatoon to compete. Newfoundland, Manitoba, Quebec and of course Saskatchewan." Nagy was pleased to say the Saskatchewan and Humboldt participants performed very well.

He also stated that National's work as a qualifier and competitors who excel have a chance at moving on to the next level, "A lot of the guys I train with, we all did really well. So we'll actually be going to Poland this year."

Nagy and other qualifiers will travel to Poland this October to compete in different events including Kumate(Sparring), Kata(Forms Training) and Team Kata.

He hopes to translate the lesson and experiences he has overseas back to his students here in Humboldt.

"I grew up in a small town near Tisdale, went to high school in Porcupine Plain. I never had a lot of access to things like (karate). There was some stuff, but because of the travel it wasn't always easy. I'm really glad that I can come to a small community like (Humboldt)."

Humboldt Karate Club is still a fairly new club, but Nagy says the students are coming along really well and hopes that some opportunities for travel may come up for them as well.

"It's my goal for the next Nationals which is going to be in Newfoundland to get funding together so (the students) can go there and compete."
