Each year, Humboldt District Community Services holds a summer program for kids in the area.

Support Services Manager Nicole Kinzel says that it helps in many ways.

"We're providing a program for children who may not be able to access a typical summer camp. So we are meeting that need for children who may not get the experience to have a summer program or summer camp, and it also gives the parents a break."

Kinzel adds how the program keeps kids involved throughout the summer.

"Our program is for children that have varying abilities. We provide a summer camp for children that have diverse needs and may be at risk, that sort of thing. The proceeds help us to do the programming, we try to keep our cost low for families so the finances are not a barrier for people."

She goes on to add that boredom can be a predominant mood for kids if they don't have enough activities throughout the summer break.

"If you are in school all year and then there's nothing for you in the summer, it can be some really long days so we are providing a break for the kids and the families as well."

Fundraising for the program continued at the Humboldt Co-op on Thursday with a barbecue. They raised a total of $676.
