Humboldt city council on Monday decided to take one more step along the process of allowing a cannabis retailer in the city.

SLGA had sent a letter in January asking any communities wanting to opt out to notify the agency by February 28.

"If SLGA does not hear back from you by this date, we will assume your consent and SLGA will proceed with the cannabis retail selection process that includes your community," the letter says.

Humboldt council chose not to immediately opt out. However Coun. Lorne Pratchler told council he wanted the public to have input on the decision.

That's still possible, as the course taken Monday isn't set in stone, planning coordinator Anthony Andre told Bolt FM.

"So far we're moving forward with that. That doesn't, however, mean that dispensaries are now a permitted use in Humboldt. They are not. We will need to do an amendment to our zoning bylaw if we would like to proceed in that manner."

Humboldt, like other municipalities, is still waiting on the province's full suite of regulations around marijuana.

The city has been allocated one spot for a retail outlet.
