Humboldt City Council earmarked extra cash for replacing Christmas decorations and setting up street lights along Fifth Avenue as it passed the 2018 budget Monday.

The extra decorations are budgeted to cost $5,000, with the extra street lights costing $75,000, city manager Joe Day said.

The city is merging two communications jobs into one and staff found areas that were over budgeted, so the tax increase remained at the proposed two per cent.

“A lot of it was just scrutinizing the budget dollars that had been allocated in past years and just sharpening our pencils a little bit more,” Day said.

Staff and council feel the two per cent is manageable and keeps the city on top of its infrastructure needs, Day said.

The budget includes almost $2 million to replace water mains and associated road structures. Council also supported additional street lights on the eastern and western ends of Highway 5 coming into the city.

Around $150,000 to $200,000 will be spent fixing up the Centennial Park ball diamonds, and $90,000 has been set aside for maintenance at the Uniplex, parks and other facilities.
