On April 10th, eight teachers and coaches were honoured with Horizon Central Recognition Awards.

The recognition awards were given out to the eight recipients for excellence in athletics at Horizon Central Athletic Association's annual spring meeting.

One of the coaches to receive the award was Karla Gardiner from Humboldt Collegiate.

"It was very kind of my school to nominate me, and I very much appreciate it, but that's not the reason I coach, its all for the kids," said Gardiner.

Gardiner has been heavily involved in coaching since 2001. However, it's not only about developing skills for Gardiner, perseverance, determination, and relationships are a top priority as well.

"It's fun to build the relationships outside of the classroom and seeing them graduate through high school and through sports. We always appreciate the efforts that the volunteers put in with supporting the kids and helping them grow and build. It's great seeing the kids later on in the years and having the memories of them through high school sports."

Gardiner has coached curling for 13 years, track and field for 18 years, senior badminton for 19 years as well as acting as an assistant coach for soccer from 2004-2006.

"I can't believe I've been at it for that many years, but it has surely brought a lot of memories."

Each day we will focus in on another one of these great teachers, their recognition award, and their coaching career.
