Canada's top child and youth mentoring organization, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been a staple in the community.

Throughout September, the City of Humboldt is teaming up with with the non-profit organization to recognize Big Brothers Big Sisters month.

Mayor Malcolm Eaton made the proclamation at council's meeting on August 22.

Crystal Gudmundson's daughter Deanna has been a little in the program and in 2013, was teamed up with her mentor, Kathy.

"A friend of mine that I went to school with had her son in it and told me Deanna would be interested in it because her son really liked it," she said.

Through the big/little partnership, it allows for a quality bonding experience that involves no shortage of fun activities.

"It's amazing. Deanna loves going with Kathy. She always looks forward to going over to her house to bake cookies," explained Gudmundson. "They can talk about stuff from being silly to serious. Whenever Deanna comes home she is so excited and tells me everything they did."

Gudmundson noted that she has seen many changes in her daughter's behaviour thanks to the relationship between Deanna and Kathy.

"She's gotten a little more confident. She makes friends easier now. She cares a lot more now. There was one year where Deanna and Kathy had grown vegetables in the community garden and they decided to give them to the food bank."

Gudmundson says she is thankful that they were able to join the BBBS family.

"They've just done so much. They helped Deanna and Kathy get in contact with Sylvan about getting help with school work," she explained. "They also sent them to the Katy Perry concert a couple years ago."

In celebrating the month, there will be a fundraising barbecue for the organization at the Humboldt Co-op Food Store on Friday from 11:30am to 1:30pm.

Later in September, a wine and cheese night will be held to recognize ambassadors.
