Communities in Bloom Humboldt got to celebrate something over the weekend they've never celebrated before.

The City of Humboldt won their Category at the Communities in Bloom National and International Awards Ceremonies that were held in Regina Saturday night.

Janice Ruedig is a member of Communities in Bloom here in Humboldt.

She explains it wasn't just one thing the committee focused on to improve their scores from previous years.

"I don't think there's really any one thing, we just worked steadily in all the areas. There's six different areas they (the judges) look at, so we just kind of did little things in each of those areas just to push it up a little better in each area. I don't know if there's one particular thing, but steady work in all the areas."

Humboldt is in a category of towns and cities with a population between 45 hundred and 9 thousand residents.

Ruedig describes an example of something the judges liked about the Humboldt area.

"They were very impressed with the work that the Original Humboldt Committee has done out at the Original Humboldt Site. They are trying to restore the Prairie Grasslands around the Original Humboldt Site, and that was really impressive and that was one of the things we receive an honorable mention for."

This is the first time Humboldt has won their category, coming close for several years before.

Ruedig describes the feeling of winning their category.

"It was awesome. We were surprised and couldn't believe it. I even think Sheila (Nordick) even gave out a little scream when we got it. It was awesome to get called up to the stage and get our reward."

Communities are judged in 6 categories by Communities in Bloom judges; tidiness, heritage conservation, environmental action, urban forestry, landscaping and floral display.
