They are among the most important people you may never meet on a day-to-day basis, but their service is vital.

First responders of the Saskatoon Health Region were getting their re-certification in various training aspects at the Humboldt District Health Complex on Saturday.

The full day of training is mandatory for all first responders, as Sherri Julé, Manager of Pre-Hospital Emergency Medial Services for the region explains.

"Every two years the first responders are required to complete their lists of training," she said. "We're providing that training for them. They're required to go through certain skill stations, and so they are re-certifying in their airway and oxygen, spinal, lifting, moving, and their patient assessment."

With technology evolving all the time, Julé stated that their training revolves around the same basis every second year.

"It's the same training every two years. We like a hands-on approach, and technology doesn't neccessarily provide that. There is certainly a lot of online training that people do as well, but we do require them to come and participate in the training workshops every two years."

She added that while the re-certification is for experienced first responders, they are always looking for people eager to help others and become first responders.

"There is quite a committment that people are required to do. They have to take the training, they have to re-certify themselves every two years, they have to take CPR on an annual basis, and then of course there is responding to the 911 calls."

"It certainly is for the people that are very interested and have a passion for helping people in those emergency situations, and we do have wonderful volunteers, and they do a fantastic job. We certainly do hope though to increase the number of volunteers we have, so anyone that is interested, give us a call."

If you are interested in becoming a first responder, a course will be available in Quill Lake over the final two weekends of October. General information can be obtained as well be calling Mila at 306-946-1214.
