The Horizon School Division held their annual meeting of electors Wednesday afternoon at their head office Humboldt where they discussed the highlights of the 2014-15 school year among other topics.

The executives heard from the Chief Financial Officer as he provided a positive monetary report surrounding the division's $82 million budget plus they heard from Director of Education Kevin Garinger in his annual report.

"I hit on the goals of course that relate to safe and caring and the work that's happening around that area. Of course literacy which is a huge focus not only here in Horizon but across the province and certainly through the education sector plan as well as focusing on assessment which is an area which we continue to build an develop."

"It's been an exciting year," Garinger added.

Lionel Diedricks outlined the budget which is funded by 61 percent of grants, 26 percent comes from taxes with the remaining 13 percent coming in from other sources.

Garinger says they need to be smart with their requests including such projects as roof repairs.

"It's our job to ensure that we provide them with the information they need to make the decisions they need to. That said they will continue to make decisions that are in the best interest of HSD, their stakeholders including parents, students and community members."

Garinger said they have some roof projects that could cost nearly $2 million, that is similar to what they receive in funding for maintenance in an entire year.

He also stressed the graduation rates for students within the HSD. Garinger explained just how important getting your degree can be as grad season nears.

"With that door closing in terms of high school it opens up a new door for them in terms of the work force or in terms of post-secondary education. It's a wonderful chance for me to go out and see our kids and see our students who have put in a lot of work over the last 13 years of their lives. To have it culminate in that way is fantastic, I look forward to that opportunity."

The overall rate of graduation within three years of starting grade 10 is 83.5 percent in 2014-15, that's well ahead of the provincial average of 75.2 percent province wide.

In 08-09 nine those numbers were 87.8 and 74.6 respectively.
