With technology continually evolving, and more devices available for exposure, the Horizon School Division is helping students, staff, and parents with their digital footprint.

During the 2016-17 school year, the division crafted a new presentation entitled "Social Media Awareness & Digital Citizenship", which goes over many points about the updates to technology.

The division has also upgraded from within, introducing Google Classroom to their schools.

With that, Superintendent of Learning Services Crandall Hrynkiw has been presenting to numerous schools within the division to discuss online activity.

"In order for students to bring their own devices, we need them to be responsible digital citizens," Hrynkiw said of Google Classroom. "That's kind of the base of my presentation, but it also gets into the fact that every student's digital footprint is online and once it is online, it's always there."

Hrynkiw's presentation goes on to cover a number of topics including cyberbullying, anti-bullying resources, and safety tips for using social media platforms.

Everywhere you look, you are likely to spot kids plugged into their favourite device, app, or game.

Hrynkiw says that they have examined research done by Jason Dorsey, who has looked at multiple generations about their electronic usage.

"When he looks at Generation Z, which most of our students are, they use up to five screens and more at a time. Everything from smart TV's to tablets to cellphones to PlayStations, Nintendo Switch. You plug in a new smart TV and you can browse the web right out of the box and most people don't necessarily realize that."

The variety of apps in today's world expands everyday, and Hrynkiw says that has helped his presentations.

"Lots of times parents will have questions about a particular app that I'm not aware of, so I will go research it and sure enough, parents have a reason to be concerned about that app."

Hrynkiw presented to students at Three Lakes School on Tuesday and will be visiting Humboldt Public on January 23, and Humboldt Collegiate on February 9.
