Humboldt is experiencing a bit of 'spring cleaning', and it's all thanks to a crew from Humboldt & District Community Services (HDCS).
A team gathered up 6 large bags of trash around Quill Centre on Monday. It was all part of an inclusive employment program which is organized by Niamh Menz, Supportive Employment Coordinator at HDCS.
Several individuals with disabilities or barriers to traditional employment have participated in the program. HDCS has found community competitive paid employment for many through such tasks as mailouts, lawn care, odd jobs, deck staining, and garbage clean-up.
Menz says it helps individuals learn to work as a team, and all of the components to maintain a job.
It can be more challenging to find mainstream employment if one is faced with disabilities or barriers to finding and maintaining employment, but HDCS is offering solutions.
"You're helping people achieve their goals and that's so important. We're also highlighting that everybody can work. People can still be very successful; they might just do it a different way," says Menz.
HDCS also tries to help students and other individuals adjust to life in the workforce and also tries to match employers' needs with the skills and abilities they possess and help build new ones.
