There is no shortage of history with the Zerbin's and their family operation.

Whether that history has been the years spent on the farm, or now the hardships of having to move away due to rising flood waters, support has been one thing the family has always felt.

"The water levels have been crazy around here. We are living in kind of a flood area, but we're dealing with it and looking for a better and brighter future," explained Garth Zerbin.

He continued on, adding how water from the Quill Lakes was continuously creeping in on them, which made them look to get out.

"We had a berm built and with water on all four sides of us now, we couldn't see a better future and thought we better get everything out now safely and make sure no one gets hurt," he said. "We've been working on that all summer. We live in a great community. The Town of Jansen has been awesome. They had a huge fundraiser for us, and I can't thank them enough."

The fundraiser, held in August, raised over $120,000 for the family.

Part of the ongoing work is the leveling of ground to allow for a mobile home to come in. Zerbin's son Garnet and his family had their home moved to the area north of Dafoe as well.

On the flipside of going through a lengthy uproot, the family is having one of their best years in the field, according to Garth.

"It couldn't be any better. It's one of the best harvests we have had. We've seen a little bit of rain lately here, but otherwise, it is going swell," he said.

The family plants about 3,700 acres, splitting it up between wheat, barley, and canola.

"Things are much drier and they're looking better. We can actually do some field work going through sloughs, which we haven't done in years," noted Zerbin. "Everyone is happy, things are going well, and we're catching up on things we haven't been able to do in years."

Zerbin says that Garnet's son Gabe will make it a fifth-generation farm.
