Humboldt-Watrous MLA Donna Harpauer was front and centre during the budget tabling on Wednesday in Regina.

One announcement was the capital expenditure for Highway 5 work.

"We're now going to see some construction on Highway 5," the veteran politician explained Friday morning. "In the budget is dollars allocated for two sets of passing lanes. I know in areas where they do have the passing lanes they much appreciate them so I'm very much looking forward to those being constructed."

City of Humboldt administration also cheered at the announcement. Another part of the budget was revenue sharing and how much that would affect urban centres.

"They were quite concerned about that being changed in this budget, it remains whole. The revenue sharing has gone up over 100 percent, I think it's even more so for the community of Humboldt. I know that those are well appreciated dollars."

The city reported they will receive $1.1 million through the program that disperses one percent of the PST revenue that's generated. The PST did move up from five percent to six.

Many across Saskatchewan, especially in rural areas are concerned with the stalling of the Saskatchewan Transportation Company, Harpauer admits it's not ideal especially for her rural constituency but it was time for the province to do away with the nation's only public bus line.

"The company has tried everything in order to get ridership up and it just continues to decline in a dramatic way. It's just becoming more and more of a money pit and not sustainable so at some point in time you do have to make that difficult decision."

If the government would have kept the bus line afloat it would cost taxpayers $85 million over the next five years.
