Greenhouses are once again full of customers on a daily basis, as green thumbs and gardeners look to begin the beautification of their yards.

The popular hobby can be somewhat tricky in Saskatchewan.

Pauline of Green Acres Greenhouse in Watrous says that as of Thursday, you can feel safe putting things in the ground.

"Don't be in too big of a rush to put your plants out. This is Saskatchewan and our first frost free days typically aren't until after the 24th of May."

For those new to the garden scene, you may be unfamiliar with how plants operate. Some will need to be re-planted, while others will stick around.

"A perennial is a plant that if you plant it this year, it will grow again next year," Pauline explained. "An annual is a plant that if you grow it, it will die off in the fall and you have to plant it again in the spring."

There is also some pointers for the greenhouse to ground process that you won't want to avoid according to Pauline.

"Harden your plants before you put them out. The leaves are soft from being in the greenhouse and if you put them in the sun, they may sun burn," she said. "If you put them in the shade for a few days prior to planting them, they will be in much better shape."

She added that it is important that you map out where everything should go before you purchase your plants.

"When choosing plants, whether flowers or shrubs, consider where you will be planting them. Some do better in shade and some do better in the sun," she said. "Also consider the fact that your trees and shrubs will not stay the same size as when you purchase them. Be sure to allow room for growth."

It is also important to choose the right fertilizer for your plants and use the right amounts.
