One young Humboldt resident is looking to make an impact.

Ten-year-old Duke Brochu, who has type 1 diabetes, is holding an event on Monday, November 13, to help raise funds to find a cure.

He says that he isn't the only one in his family with diabetes.

"I found out that I had diabetes because my grandma has it, so she knew the signs to it," he explained. "My dad has a tester because he has it too, and I was high when we tested."

Being just 10, Brochu says that there is mixed knowledge in terms of how much his friends, classmates, and teammates know about diabetes.

"Lots do and lots don't. Most don't know what insulin is. They know I have to test lots of times a day though."

Brochu says that they had some options in planning a fundraiser, but he elected to go with the skate-a-thon because he likes to skate.

"People that want to help out will get a sheet that is called a pledge form. We will start asking people to donate for every minute they skate or just give them a cash donation."

The skate-a-thon will take place from 12:45 to 3:15pm on Monday at the Elgar Petersen Arena.

Brochu presented to Humboldt City Council in October to propose his idea and get support from the city for ice time.
