Preventing the worst case scenario in the pool is at the forefront, as National Drowning Prevention Week is observed.

On average, Saskatchewan sees about 20 drownings per year.

According to Shelby Rushton of the Saskatchewan Life Saving Society, the majority of drownings involve people not wearing life jackets.

"Ninety percent of the victims of drownings were not wearing a life jacket," she said. "If they would have had that life jacket on, it would have prolonged them so they could get some help, or it would have helped them get to the shore."

Rushton adds that it isn't all about swimming either.

"It includes boat safety, being cautious when you're fishing, even from the shoreline," she noted. "For little guys, making sure you're staying within arms reach, even in the backyard pools."

Knowing your limitations around the water can also help you stay safe.
