The Humboldt SPCA should soon be able to take in animals again after a gofundme.com fundraiser brought in more than $6,000.

“Hearing that I’m totally pleased. I’m so pleased that people are so caring and helping,” manager Wanda Price said.

The SPCA has racked up almost $7,000 in veterinarian bills over the past two months and had to cut staff hours and stop accepting animals, Price said. That's on top of the normal $3,000 to $4,000 spent each month on treatment.

The trouble started when they brought in a stray kitten found near the Humboldt Tim Hortons. It spread distemper to other kittens also being kept in isolation, and they all had to be put down. Price had never before seen distemper in cats, she said.

Another cat was put down after contracting feline infectious peritonitis.

One dog was found to have a tumour and had to be put down, while two others required extensive medical care.

The money from the fundraiser will help “tremendously,” Price said. On Tuesday the SPCA accepted two cats that had already been vaccinated and plans to accept another group that has also been vaccinated, though that won’t be a requirement for other drop-offs.

“I don’t want to go through that again. That was horrible,” Price said.
