Humboldt’s public works director is asking drivers to not splash through puddles during a rainstorm.

Many sightseers were driving around residential areas where large ponds formed during last week’s heavy rain, Peter Bergquist said.

“What happened was, they were driving through the ponds too fast and creating waves, essentially, and those waves sometimes go against garage doors or creep up far too close to the houses.

“So that could create problems, and in some locations it did.”

While the lift stations and other water infrastructure built over the past 10 years performed well, the city is curious as to whether people had any water infiltrating and damaging their homes, he said.

“With two inches of rain falling in a couple hours, it did create a tremendous amount of water on the surface.”

To his knowledge, most of that water was held in either the new Centennial detention pond or on the roadways.

“We are interested to know where we can still improve things. So if there is any water, we want to know about it.”
