Friday marks the fourth day of Canadian Road Safety Week.

Day four's focus is on distracted driving and making sure drivers keep their eyes on the road. The most common distractions for drivers include using an electronic hand-held device, eating, drinking, other passengers, and the list could go on and on.

The penalty for holding, using, viewing or manipulating a device, eating, grooming, or any other distractions while driving is $280 and 4 demerit points on one's license. Any repeated offences within a year will have your vehicle impounded for seven whole days.

"When you are travelling in a vehicle, you are in charge of that vehicle. You need to keep your eyes on the road, looking for hazards, or other road users," said Tyler McMurchy, manager of media relations with SGI.

Using a cell phone while driving is the most common distraction. Those that text and drive are 23 times more likely to be in an accident, and talking on the cell phone when driving makes a driver 3 to 6 times more likely to get into an accident.

Day 5 of Canadian Road Safety Week shines the light on Drug-Impaired Driving.
