Day one of court started with the Statement Of Facts and over 30 victim impact statements being entered into court.
Some of the facts:
- A Saskatchewan government report says Jaskirat Singh Sidhu should not have been on the road the day he flew through a stop sign and caused a crash with the Humboldt Broncos
team bus. - Jaskirat Singh Sidhu notes 51 violations of federal trucking
regulations on drivers' hours and 19 violations of Saskatchewan trip
inspection rules. - The semi-tractor unit did not stop prior to entering the intersection. No tire skid marks due to breaking were left by the semi-tractor unit
- At the point of impact, the semi-tractor init was travelling at a speed of 86 to 96 km/h
- immediately prior to the collision, the bus driver applied the brakes to the bus, the bus started to skid approximately 24 meters
- At the point of impact, the bus was travelling at a speed of 96 to 107 km/h
- At the point of impact, the bus struck the semi-trailer unit just forward of the wheels on the lead trailer.
- There was no way that Glen Doerksen, the bus driver, could have avoided the collision.
- There were no environmental conditions that contributed to the collision.
- The road conditions and weather conditions at the scene were suitable for safe driving.
- The intersection was clearly visible
- The sun did not interfere with Mr. Sidhu's ability to operate the semi-tractor unit
- Alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the collision
- Mr. Sidhu is not believed to have been distracted as a result of a cell phone
- An oversized stop sign, 4 feet in diameter, with a functional red traffic light was above the stop sign
- The actions of Mr. Sidhu while operating the semi-tractor unit caused the collison
- 14 people died and the scene two died in hospital
- 13 people were injured
