Crews at the EPA are Hurrying Hard to get the curling rink up and operational.

The curling rink at the Humboldt Uniplex has just recently installed a new condenser plant that will be used in the upcoming installation of the ice surface.

The condenser plant's main usage goes into the creation of the ice. "A brine solution runs under the cement slab that pulls the heat out from the ice, then it goes through a couple processes, before running out to the condenser where the heat is released into the atmosphere," said Mike Ulriksen, Director of Community and Leisure Services with the City of Humboldt.

It was decided over the course of the summer that the previous condenser had to be replaced. "It was a six to eight-week process before we received the equipment to be installed. "Just with age, the old one had started to leak and we had water getting down into the fans, which obviously when water freezes and gets hit by a fan, clearly there can be issues," Ulriksen added.

The condenser will now run for the next few days to get the temperature of the floor down to the correct degree. Once ready the Curling Club will start putting down the water layers that create the ice surface.  That process usually takes 7-10 days before the rink is up and operational for league play to begin.
