The City of Humboldt's management group continues to fine tune their spending ahead of the 2017 budget.

Tuesday night, council held a public meeting to unveil their priority list for the capital budget.

Manager Roy Hardy talks about why they invited the public to take to have their say.

"We had heard what they wanted when they were basically out talking to the councillors before the municipal election last year and be able to ensure we were on the right page when it came to presenting a capital budget tonight for council to make sure we are hitting all the priorities."

When Hardy took the job of City Manager a couple years ago coming from Ontario, he introduced "prioritized budgeting" in Humboldt. The veteran administrator now believes with the program, essentially new to Saskatchewan centres keeps them ahead of the curve and their spending remains transparent to residents.

"If you are in a situation where you are in high growth area you wouldn't have all the time to do what we're doing now in terms of consultation so it's really important when we have the opportunity to do that. Some people came tonight with some different ideas, some different thoughts, that's all part of the political process."

About 20 people attended an hour long come and go session where staff and councillors were on hand to take resident's questions and concerns ahead of the deliberation meeting.

Hardy wasn't deterred by the number of attendees.

"The people who came tonight wanted some questions answered and wanted to know that they were being heard. I think we came out of it, again some more input that either said we're on track or we're not."

Council is expected to vote on the 2017 budget in mid-April, another meeting will be held next regarding the operational budget.
