The Canadian Safe Boating Council and Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation are reminding boaters to be extra cautious at this time of year.

Darrell Crabbe, President of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation says that it is important to check the weather, as fog can appear quickly, along with higher waves due to a mixture of warm and cold air.

"We're kind of focusing on hunters who may be using a boat in their pursuit," he said. "A lot of times with weather conditions you might be better suited to take more precautions."

Crabbe says that it is important to have a personal floatation device, especially with the cooler temperatures.

"Most people that fall out of boats die of hypothermia and drowning. Most of them don't have lifejackets on."

He added that a lot of people elect not to wear a PFD due to its restraint, or it being a bother.

"There's a lot of new innovations in lifejackets. There is one called a horse collar where you can throw a coat over it and barely notice it."

'Stretching the Season' is being observed from September 23 to 29 in the area, where the Canadian Safe Boating Council is alerting boaters to be aware and be prepared should the unexpected occur.
