A couple of years ago, the board at the Community Gathering Place applied for grants for some much-needed improvements to the non-profit facility.

"It is a heritage building. It's got a lot of history. It's a nice building and it's a very usable building and it would be a tragedy if it actually had to shut its doors," says manager Glenda Frey.

After receiving grants and other funding over the past two years, many upgrades and improvements have been made possible.

The Community Gathering Place opened its doors to the public Wednesday.

The most significant changes made to the facility were through increasing its accessibility.

"We're really excited! Now we have wheelchair accessibility to the ground level, upper hall, and the lower hall. We now have a wheelchair-accessible washroom in the lower hall (and ground level)," says Frey.

A $43,000 platform lift was installed, to assist those in wheelchairs up and down the facility's storeys. "It's accessible for anyone and everyone", Frey says proudly.

Many kitchen, electrical, lighting, exterior and window improvements and more have also been made possible.

Frey says anyone is welcome to visit and tour the new and improved Community Gathering Place.

"If you haven't seen it for a long time, please come on down!"
