The warmth of the indoors and a glass of eggnog with family and friends may be a popular Christmas activity.

Following a milder start to December, the cold, arctic air is soon on its way, according to Environment Canada's Terri Lang.

"We're dropping into quite a cold snap. There is a system moving through right now which is sort of the last bubble of relatively mild air."

Temperatures are between minus-11 and 13 to wrap up the week, with that cold snap following up, according to Lang.

"In behind the system, the cold air is going to settle in and it looks like right from Christmas to New Year's, it looks like quite a time of cold air."

Current conditions see the wind chill hover in the mid-to-high 20's. Once the 'deep freeze' arrives, that will drop to near minus-40 degrees, with daytime highs in the 20's.

Lang says that this will likely be the coldest Christmas the area has seen over the last few years.
