Time is running out to send in applications for a new initiative at Humboldt City Hall.

A select number of students in Humboldt will have the chance to learn the ins and outs of how the city operates.

The city is introducing a new youth council program, that will allow five to seven students the opportunity to join the program.

"It's a city run initiative and it is basically to help engage the youth in our community," explained Community Development Coordinator Colby McClelland. "Another primary goal is to teach the students what we do here as a municipal government."

Students who are selected will meet on a monthly basis from October to June and will be able to take part in many events, including those surrounding Humboldt's own City Council.

"We want to allow them to voice their concerns to the city. It will also allow them to help out with events around the city," said McCelland. "They will also have the opportunity to potentially present to council as a delegation, as well as attend council meetings."

McClelland says that they picked up on the idea through the Town of Kindersley, who launched their own youth council in 2009.

He added that the program will be a great learning tool for those involved.

"We want to teach them about the formal processes, but also the services the city provides. Understanding that money always comes from somewhere and what things like property taxes are," noted McClelland. "Even coming out of university, there were some things I didn't understand when I first started, so I think it will be very beneficial for their future."

McClelland is currently taking applications for the program until September 30. They can be submitted to City Hall, or e-mailing colby.mclelland@humboldt.ca.

The program is open to all students in Grades 8 to 10 who go to school in Humboldt.
