For 31 years the Children's Wish Foundation has been giving sick kids a once in a life time experience to either help them cope with their illness or just to give their families a break from the everyday.

The nationwide non-profit charity is once again in the midst of their push to sell lottery tickets raising money to grant children their wishes. So far over 22,500 wishes in the three decades have been granted, each with an estimated cost of $10,000.

Provincial Director Gay Oldhaver expanded on their organization during a stop in Humboldt Wednesday.

"We grant wishes to children who are ages 3-17 who have been diagnosed with a life threatening illness. The eligibility criteria varies quite a bit however we actually have a medical advisory committee that takes a look at every single wish referral and that child's diagnosis and then makes a decision."

Oldhaver is proud to add they have never once turned down a child's wish if they are within the requirements, that includes financially whether it's lack thereof or the families own needs can be met quite easily.

Oldhaver says she is also the lucky one that usually gets to be part of the team that lets a child know their wish will be granted. She admits that's easily the best part of leading the provincial chapter.

"Not just leading up to the wish but after the wish there's many, many families that wish to stay in touch with us to help other families. We're actually calling that wishing it forward so there's lots of families and children who are choosing to wish it forward by volunteering back with the organization."

One of those is "David," whose wish was a family trailer. South 20 Dodge was a huge sponsor of that wish and Oldhaver says they are still in touch with David's family. They are happy to share stories their family now has using the trailer every Summer.

"It's just so amazing to hear those follow up stories and what that wish still means today," Oldhaver continued. "I think the community here has to be proud that they have made a difference."

Right now the Foundation is in the stretch drive of their lottery ticket sales. All the information you need to find prizes or how to purchase can be found here.

The Children's Wish Foundation has been granting wishes since 1984, whether it's a travel, item, entertainment or celebrity dream a child has they connect the dots and make it happen, purchasing a lottery ticket can help with that.
