Humboldt City Council has yet to decide how it will approach cannabis sales in the city.

“Those discussions really haven’t taken place yet,” Mayor Rob Muench said.

Council had been waiting for the provincial government’s announcement of which businesses would be eligible to open a limited number of pot shops across Saskatchewan.

That announcement happened last week. Canopy Growth, which operates the Tweed Grasslands brand, plans five retail sites in Humboldt, Meadow Lake, the Rural Municipality of Corman Park, Melville, and Fort Qu’Appelle.

Council must now consider how to regulate the business, with the biggest issue being location - such as making sure it isn’t near a school. The issue will be discussed at a future meeting, Muench said.

Council decided earlier this year not to opt out the provincial process of picking retailers, but could still pass a bylaw to that effect and ban pot sales, Muench said.
