Motorists driving through Humboldt have been greeted on Humboldt’s west side with the sight of the multi-storey Canalta hotel draped on its north and west sides. The extensive scaffolding and wrap has been the subject of curious glances and conversation. The Humboldt Canalta is undergoing exterior refurbishing of its stucco.

In a communique from Canalta’s head office, the company states that improper application of the stucco occurred during the original construction. The problem resulted in water penetrating the outside of the building. In order to prevent additional damage, Canalta ordered immediate remediation.

Ryan Semchuk is the marketing manager for Canalta Hotels. Semchuk explained the nature of the work.

“We are removing the stucco and resurfacing the whole exterior of the building. We are using some professionally trained remediation contractors in order to do this and keeping an eye on air quality to ensure that nothing operates outside of a normal range.”

The contractor has ensured Canalta that air quality in the building is well within normal parameters, at times registering better than outside air.

During the renovations, the hotel remains open and fully operational with only a few rooms unavailable. Once the north and west sides of the building are completed, the contractors will move to the south and east sides to complete the balance of the building. In anticipation of the work, all signage from the front of the building had been removed. The company hopes that the work will be completed in the next 90 days barring any unforeseen complications.

Semchuk says that Canalta looks forward to the refurbished exterior and to serving travellers to Humboldt for a long time to come.
