Every year farmers burn fields and sometimes old buildings, however, this can turn a safe situation into a dangerous one or potentially costly.

The Humboldt Fire Department have received a few calls this year that were not necessarily an emergency.

This is due to people not reporting controlled burns.

Fire Chief Mike Kwasnica explains what this means for the fire department and those involved.

"It takes us out of service for a real emergency that we wouldn't be able to respond to and it uses up resources that don't need to be used up. And it does create a financial cost to the people doing the fire that forgot to phone in."

All controlled burns, like farmers burning fields, old buildings etc are to call the controlled burn number to report the fire.

The information is sent to the provincial center that way all the information is in the database.

Anything that produces a lot of smoke should be called in according to Kwasnica.

Keep it safe, "make sure of the weather, and it's not a really windy day. If its super dry we may not have a fire ban on in our area at the moment but use your head when your working with fire."Kwasnica mentioned that they have had fires called in as controlled burns that have turned into uncontrolled situations.

The number to report controlled burns is 866 404 4911.
