Calico Gymnastics has well over 200 athletes in their club.

Calico Gymnastics is looking to land big with a national competition.

The club has had it's nomination accepted for Kraft Heinz Project Play, which awards $250,000 to a community organization looking to better its region with a recreational facility upgrade.

Gymnastics is the most widely attended sport in Humboldt, and seen growth of over 200 athletes per year since its inception in 2002.

"This isn't just about helping Calico Gymnastics, it's also about Humboldt having another activity for young families, as well as adults, because gymnastics is for all," says President Carolyn MacLean. "It's to put money towards a community project to help people get active."

She added that with the new building coming, it is another option for other groups to enjoy.

"Gymnastics is a sport that hits so many different aspects of athleticism and being active," said MacLean. "We're also in a partnership with the town, so our new facility will be open to other non-profit organizations to use, so we're really a community activity centre."

Construction is underway on Calico's new building.

With the nomination process closed as of June 12, now begins the promotional stage for each community project.

You can visit the Calico nomination page through the Kraft Heinz Project Play website and comment on their post. Additional support can be made by posting photos and using #khpp_calicogymnastics on Twitter and Instagram.

MacLean says that if that goes well, they will have a chance to secure the grand prize.

"We'll be entered in the top four projects through what we've written up, and then there will be a voting process for those top four community projects."

The Top 4 will be unveiled on July 8, during an edition of TSN SportsCentre.

Other area projects that have been nominated include the Kelvington Swimming Pool and Ball Diamonds, Colonsay Swimming Pool, and Lanigan Water Park.
