Students in Bruno are going to be walking to assist Fort McMurray fire evacuees on Thursday, as they raise money for the those affected.

Krystal Bartley, a teacher at the school, says they will be doing a walk-a-thon which will end with a community barbecue.

"We're going to be starting the walk at 10:30am. We're going to be walking through the community to raise awareness and then we're going to meet at the sports grounds for the barbecue."

Funds raised from the day will be going to assist Denise Rieger's family. She is an alumni of the school, and her family lost their home in the wildfire.

"It just really hit home because Saskatchewan is a neighbouring province to Alberta, and there are a lot of families that live in Saskatchewan that work in Fort McMurray," Bartley noted.

There is some incentive for students to raise money as well, including the opportunity to make their teachers enjoy some pie in a different fashion.

"The student who raises the most money will get a prize. The classroom goal is going to be a float," Bartley said. "Our total goal is one thousand dollars, and if we raise that money, some teachers, including the principal (Lianne Borstmayer), are willing to take a pie in the face."

Proceeds will benefit the Canadian Red Cross in addition to the Rieger family.
