Being an astronaut is clearly a pinnacle for anyone's career, it's a difficult job that takes years upon years of training but a man from Bruno is shooting for the stars.

39 year-old Jason Leuschen now calls Ottawa home, is currently a pilot Royal Canadian Air Force training to be a helicopter pilot.

Leuschen is currently 1 of 72 other hopefuls who are moving onto the next stage of selection taking place in Montreal.

"They are going to about four days of physical and aptitude testing on us," he explained. "After that spaced over the next few months there is going to be three more rounds of assessments and testing, they will be making cuts in between each round and hopefully by April they are scheduled to have the final interviews done and make decisions shortly thereafter."

Leuschen says he's always been fascinated by the sky, as a young boy he would climb to the top of their family granary to take in many Saskatchewan sunsets.

"Sitting out in the grain truck out in the field waiting for the combine to come around you have an awesome view of the stars and the sky out there, really just have been hooked on the sky ever since. I just wanted to work in aerospace, became a pilot and now hopefully have a chance to do this."

It wasn't only his farm life that triggered his space travel dreams, he goes back to his days at the Bruno School as well that paved his path to possible history.

"I had some really encouraging teachers who sort of got me on the right path. I got into science fairs quite heavily, I went to the Canada Wide Science fair four times and the International Science Fair once. That really put me on to that road to getting into engineering, getting into science, that's really built up to the career I have had so far."

After school he went on to study mechanical engineering at University of Saskatchewan.
