The Humboldt Broncos have wrapped up their first "Seed for Green, Harvest for Gold" fundraiser.

Early indication is that the initiative went extremely well.

Ross Ruedig assisted the board of directors bringing his agricultural back ground and knowledge into the equation. He was on hand when they harvested the canola crop on a parcel of land they rented south of the City of Humboldt.

He says this is something they have been working at for a few years.

"They started to canvas the business community to see if they would help out and the agricultural business community came forward in very great fashion to help the Humboldt Broncos out with this."

The list of companies involved is extensive, but each were crucial in the fundraiser which is going to assist the junior "A" hockey club immensely.

Horizon Fertilizers provided canola seed and chemicals, Richardson Pioneer contributed fertilizer, Hergott Farm Equipment assisted with some seeding equipment, Farmworld helped out with a sprayer for the crop, KMK Sales swathed the crop, JD Ag Tech provided a combine and operators, Wacker Enterprises helped haul the canola plus Co-operators Insurance donated hail protection for the field.

Ruedig says in a world of ever dropping attendance across junior hockey this shows people still care about the Broncos.

"Oh definitely, if the community wants to have a hockey club in town I guess it's great, the businesses will step up and help them out and keep the hockey club viable."

The crop was taken off on Friday, Ruedig says it looked great, thanks to crucial rain later on in the season.

"Yes, it actually turned out pretty good, it was actually excellent. I think the Humboldt Broncos will be very pleased, to put it lightly."

An official announcement on the total will be made by the hockey club in the near future.
