For the past 14 years, the city of Humboldt has helped raise funds for those affected by Type 1 diabetes by hosting the Humboldt & District Diabetes Walk.

Maria Strasser, the co-chair of Humboldt and District Juvenile Diabetes Walk, says this year was particularly meaningful. After the April 6th bus crash, the organization wanted to take a step back to let the community heal. However, the coordination with the Roughriders visit to the city worked very well, and the time was right Sunday morning. The two events went back to back so that the community could show support for both important events.

Humboldt Bronco Kaleb Dalghren began his Dahlgren's Diabeauties initiative this past SJHL season and has become a mentor to Walk Ambassador Duke Brochu, 10.

Brochu received his Type 1 diabetes diagnosis in September 2017. His mom Amanda Brochu says Duke has been adjusting well and learning how to manage his blood sugar and insulin levels.

Duke is honoured to have Dahlgren as a mentor and to walk beside him.

"He taught me to keep going and don't give up even though you have diabetes and have to manage it and not let it manage you," says Brochu of one of his favourite Broncos and role models.
