The Screening Program for Breast Cancer mobile bus is in Humboldt for the next month.

The bus will be parked in Humboldt at the Canalta Hotel until June 6th and individuals over the age of 50 can make an appointment for a mammogram.

"The mobile travels to rural remote areas across the province to screen women. When women turn 50 they are invited to our program to have a mammogram. They don't need a referral from their family physician or nurse practitioner. The mamo equipment on the bus is exactly the same as the equipment at any one of our six satellites sites throughout the province. We park the bus at communities based on need, and Humboldt is a fairly large community, so we're here a little longer than other sites," said Lorrie Pearce who is the Early Detection Coordinator for breast screening.

The screening process takes about 10 minutes to complete and early detection is a big key for treatment and survival rates.

"As we all know, the earlier cancer is detected, the more treatable it is, and that's the concept behind screening programs. The letters are sent to healthy people, and at times, unfortunately, if we do detect cancer, it's caught at an early stage and therefore much more treatable and survival is much better."

Individuals who would like to make an appointment can do so by calling 1-855-584-8228.
