The post-holiday slump is something that many people struggle to deal with, which often prompts discussions about the winter blues.

Building up to seeing family and friends during the holidays and having it go by so quickly can lead to sorrow feelings, according to Donna Bowyer with the Canadian Mental Health Association.

"With the Christmas letdown, our family is gone, we're by ourselves, it's cold. Some people will struggle with seasonal disorder because of the lack of sunlight."

Checking out that first credit card statement following the holidays can also lead to worrying or sad thoughts, Bowyer says.

It's also a time where many get set for a fresh start and plan out new things for their lives, only to fall back into the same old slump.

"We've made our New Year's resolution and by the third week, a lot of us have given up on it and we start to feel like we're a failure," explained Bowyer. "Really, January is one of the lowest energy months of the year, so it really isn't a good time to be making these promises to ourselves about all the things we're going to do."

Bowyer adds that sometimes you "just have to take stock", meaning possibly switching up your lifestyle to change your mood.
